WHEN I SAY AFRICA

WHEN I SAY AFRICA

WHEN I SAY AFRICA follows a young American volunteer and a Kenyan photojournalist on a journey through the West’s imaginary Africa, from 19th century missionary narratives to the news and pop culture images that inspire modern “voluntourists.”

As they question the mission to “save” Africa, the film uncovers what’s at stake when westerners go to Africa to fulfill the fantasy of doing good in the world.

As western filmmakers, we’re turning the lens on our own motives and myths that continue to drive popular representations of Africa.

WHEN I SAY AFRICA (formerly titled FRAMED) is currently in post-production for a 2019 release.
